An ice caddy race against the clock is not something you see every day.
The mere idea conjures up childhood memories of game show contestants roaming the aisles of stores, doing whatever it takes to pile items into their shopping cart.
The contest should excite fans attending Friday’s OHL playoff semi-final between the North Bay Battalion and the Hamilton Bulldogs.
“Shopping local is about celebrating the diversity of entrepreneurs in our community – the people who bring us the things that add joy to our lives,” says Mark Sherry, founder of One Red Maple, the online technology that empowers retailers local independents to compete with large retailers. like Amazon and Walmart.

According to a study conducted by Loco BC in 2019, independent businesses redistribute up to 4.6 times more revenue than multinationals, retaining up to 63% of revenue in local markets, compared to only 14% with multinationals.

One Red Maple and the North Bay Battalion have invited six local retailers to donate prizes to the on-ice extravaganza taking place during the second intermission of Friday night’s home game. One lucky entrant chosen from the crowd will have 60 seconds to rush onto the ice filling their basket with exciting prizes from Creative Learning, The Farm, Junior World, Lefebvre’s Source for Adventure, Skaters North Source for Sports and Vested Interest.
If they beat the clock, they’ll win a $1,000 shopping spree at one of the participating independent retailer’s stores. In addition, they will be able to keep the items in the basket and give them to the local heroes of their choice who have enriched the life of our community.
