An underage boy was fatally shot near an Oregon shopping center on Friday, prompting local police departments to respond and nearby schools to go into lockdown.

The Salem Police Department advised people to avoid downtown near the Salem Center shopping mall after reports of gunfire around 2:15 p.m. When officers responded to a business near High Street NE and from Chemeketa Street NE, they found the miner with gunshot wounds.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police initially stressed that the shooting was not an active shooter incident before saying it was shortly after. Fox News contacted the police.

Officers searched the mall and escorted employees and customers out of the building. No other victims were found and no suspects were arrested, police said.

Authorities said no more shots were fired after reports on social media said there had been.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools said it placed its downtown learning center and Howard Street Charter School on lockdown due to police activity.

Students were not released during the lockdown and parents were asked not to come to the school campus.

Amirah Montaner, 19, told the Statesman Journal she was inside the mall when shots were fired. She said she saw a group of children yelling at another group of children outside the mall before hearing someone in the group tell someone to show a gun.

“He fired four or five times before he ran away. I looked up and saw smoke coming out of the gun as he ran and still fired,” she said. “It took me a second to realize it had actually happened. I ran in the opposite direction.”

“I think what’s most shocking is that they looked around my age or younger,” she added. “He wasn’t even necessarily watching what he was shooting. He was just shooting.”

Authorities have not disclosed whether anyone was injured or an arrest was made.
