MLB Rumors: Yankees See Rangers Commercial Market For Independent Pitcher
It has been a busy offseason for novice pitchers, with some of the best hitting the market just weeks after free agency started.
That’s good news for right-hander Jon Gray, who has seen his compatriots cash in: Justin Verlander (one year, $ 25 million with the Houston Astros), Noah Syndergaard (one year, $ 21 million with the Houston Angels). Los Angeles), Eduardo Rodriguez (5, $ 77 million with the Detroit Tigers) and Steven Matz (four, $ 44 million with the St. Louis Cardinals).
Gray, formerly of the Colorado Rockies, is also starting to make a name for himself.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports “The Rangers are among the teams with a legitimate interest in RHP Jon Gray, according to the source. Texas has said it plans to skip this offseason, and as an added bonus, it will bring the Oklahoma native a little closer to home.
MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports that “RHP free agent Jon Gray is seen in the baseball industry as a good candidate to sign over the next week. Steven Matz’s contract is a useful point of reference for Gray; both are 30 years old and neither has received a qualifying offer. “
The New York Yankees were among the teams that considered trading to Gray before the July 30 deadline.
Gray, 30, has recorded 12 career losses in 2021. But the seven-year MLB veteran remains an attractive contender, thanks to his career average of 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
