Man pushing shopping cart in East New York, Brooklyn, finds woman’s torso inside bag

EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) — A woman’s torso was discovered in a shopping cart in Brooklyn on Thursday morning.

A man fell on the shopping cart at Atlantic Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York around 1:45 a.m.

He started pushing the cart before deciding to look into a bag inside that he thought contained trash.

It was then that he found the torso of an adult woman, probably white or Hispanic, inside the bag.

The body did not appear to be decomposed.

Authorities say there were no gunshot or stab wounds and the woman does not appear to have any identifiable marks or tattoos on that part of her body.

Police searched nearby areas but found no other body parts.

A web of cameras on Atlantic Avenue has revealed nothing so far. Authorities will review surveillance video to see who may have left the basket in the area.

The medical examiner will attempt to determine the identity of the woman and the cause of death.
No arrests were made.

As news of the affair spread, fear among the neighbors also increased.

“Oh my God, Jesus Christ, because nowadays no one is safe here anymore, I don’t know what to do because I work around the corner,” Violet Rodriguez said.

Other residents couldn’t get rid of their worries.

“They say New York is a dream, an American dream, but I don’t feel safe,” said resident Cynthia Jimenez. “I just want to love, to make this place safer.”
