Dutch supermarket chain Giant is testing a smart basket in Veghel, near Eindhoven. The retailer wants to know how the new technology adds value to its customers.

The smart cart is equipped with cameras and a touchscreen and uses artificial intelligence to independently recognize and register products added to the cart. On the touch screen, customers can follow the total amount of shopping and receive notifications about the products offered. In the future, it should also be possible to allow customers to pay via screen.

The tests carried out by colleagues and customers should allow Jumbo to determine where the opportunities and limitations lie and whether shopping is also more fun and easier for customers. Based on these experiences, the retailer will then decide whether the innovation will actually be rolled out to stores. “We are constantly looking to apply the latest innovations and technologies to improve our services to customers and continue to surprise and inspire them,” said Tim Hehenkamp, ​​Director Technology & Data at Jumbo.
