JONESBORO — A Jonesboro man told authorities he had just plunged into a dumpster when Jonesboro Police Officer Cody Jackson spotted him pushing a full shopping cart around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on State Street.
The officer noted that Alex Jerome Walker, 50, wore gloves and a backpack. After learning Walker was wanted for a misdemeanor, he failed to appear in court and took him into custody.
The officer found a container containing a small amount of marijuana. Jackson found another backpack in the cart and a small amount of methamphetamine among other things, including a meth pipe, according to a probable cause affidavit. Also in the basket was a bottle of pills with someone else’s name on it.
On Wednesday, Craighead Court District Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause to charge Walker with felony possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He set bail at $5,000.
Appearing before the judge, Walker continued to insist that he was unaware of the methamphetamine.
“Your Honor, I found this thing while diving in the dumpster,” Walker said. Fowler replied that Walker had the right to remain silent.
